VersaGage Uses & Tutorial
 Lesson 2Lesson 1

VersaGage® replaces commonly used measuring devices like tape measures, calipers, height gages, single-axis measurement tables, and even expensive coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).

Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 feature common measuring uses of the VersaGage®.  These lessons show you visually and descriptively why many of the world´s largest manufacturers and smartest job shops have replaced traditional measuring devices with the VersaGage®. Preset and Error information are also included in the Uses & Tutorial section.

Definitions

HOME POSITION:

Reader head is closed with both sets of pins and cones touching.

ZERO DISPLAY AT HOME POSITION:

While the VersaGage is at home position press the Zero Button so the display reads all zeros.  This zeros the VersaGage for linear measurements.  The display will now show the distance between the inboard side of the pins when the VersaGage is extended.

PRESET MODE:

Commonly referred to as zeroing the display for hole to hole and hole to edge measuring.  The preset mode is actually the distance between the cone centers and the cone center and flange post.  While the VersaGage is in home position press the Preset Button once, then a second time.  The display will now show a P and the displayed value is the distance on centerlines.  When the VersaGage is extended the distance between centerlines will be displayed.

OFFSET MODE:

This mode is used for inside cutout measurements.  While the VersaGage is at home position, press the Offset Button once.  For the 18 and 24 VersaGages the displayed value will be .5000.  This is the combined distance of the outboard to outboard side of the pins.  When the VersaGage is extended, the displayed value will be the actual measurement of the inside cutout. For the 40 and 60 VersaGages the displayed value will be 1.0000.  The concept is the same as the smaller VersaGages, however the user will have to subtract .5000 from the displayed measurement for an inside cutout.

Buttons

ON/OFF BUTTON:

On/Off

Turns the VersaGage on and off.  Remember to turn off your VersaGage after using to conserve the SR44 battery life.

ZERO BUTTON:

Zero

Will zero the VersaGage at any point on the beam.  Commonly used to zero the VersaGage for linear measurements, it is also used to zero the VersaGage on the first diagonal measurement when performing a squareness inspection.

OFFSET BUTTON:

Preset

Used to compensate for measurements using the outboard side of the pins. Typically used for inside cutout measurements.

PRESET BUTTON:

Preset

Used to zero the VersaGage for hole-to-hole and hole-to-edge measurements.  It is also used to change the preset value if necessary.  See Changing the Preset for further instructions.

IN-MM BUTTON:

IN-MM

Toggles the display between standard (inches) and metric at any time.

DATA-HOLD BUTTON:

Data Hold

When the VersaGage is used without attached data collection devices, pressing the button will cause the displayed measurement to be held or frozen on the display.  The displayed measurement will be held until the button is pressed a second time.  The reader head will remember where it is at on the beam allowing the user to continue to measure after releasing the held measurement.

When the VersaGage is used with attached data collection devices the button provides a convenient data transmission button.  Pressing the button will send the displayed measurement to any compliant data collection device.
